COMMERCIAL

If the old favourites are not enough, there are also many commercial travel games available, designed specifically for travel.

There are card games such as 20 Questions, and other guessing games, as well as Uno, Snap, Happy Families and Trump cards. These cards are usually based around things with engines, such as planes, cars and bikes and consist of picture and statistics. The pack is evenly decided among the players who then cite a statistic about the vehicle on the top card. If it “trumps” the same stat on the card of the next player, that card is forfeited, and the winner is the first to acquire all the cards of his or her competitors.

There are also travel versions of many popular board games such as Scrabble, Backgammon, Chess, Trivial Pursuit, Yahzee and many others, although it may be a good idea to include a spare set of dice! There are also set of Connect 4, Othello, Ludo and even Monopoly.

Some other favourites which travel well Mastermind and Battleships, as the peg format means that piece are not easily lost and travel Etch-a sketch allows kids to draw as many pictures as they like without running out of paper or ink, while Art On the Move is a fantastic travel set of crayons, felt tips and drawing pad which comes with it’s own built in desk which packs neatly away for easy transportation

In addition there are puzzle books such as crosswords, Sukodu, and word finds, as well as activity books which include mazes, join-the-dots, and colouring pages. Sticker books are a great distraction especially for younger children, and the type which allows the stickers to be moved can provide hours of fun.
