“Are we there yet?” A question that strikes dread into the hearts of parents traveling with children! Whether it be by car, bus, boat, train or plane, the excitement of a journey can quickly turn to boredom as the initial enthusiasm wanes, and the tedium and discomfort of long distance travel sets in.

Even for adults, especially habitual travelers, time waiting in airports or bus stations, or on long-haul flights, can weigh heavily. Books, magazines and newspapers are not always the answer, as motion sickness affects many people and is exacerbated when trying to read.

Getting there is supposed to be half the fun so having a good stock of travel games can help while away the time and turn the journey into an entertaining interlude, rather than all out warfare over territory in the back seat.

There are many types of games to choose from – some require nothing more than a sharp eye and a bit of imagination, while paper and pen or even a length of string can be the basis for numerous games. Some travel games are educational and can help children with numeracy and literacy skills as well as their powers of observation.

And if these pall, there are card games, board games, dice games, puzzles and activity books, as well as a wide range of hand held electronic versions of old favourites and the latest in video amusement such as the Sony PSP or the Nintendo's DS Lite.
